This was an OUTSTANDING first outing to the recently acclaimed Mohawk Valley Mining site in Sprakers, NY. The weather was colder than expected, in the high 30s, but we pushed through. Joe Soukup and Scott Hunt showed us the ins and outs of this new site for us, and we were amazed at the extensive step-wise series of ledges that ascend upslope the vast hills. Joe helped point out the various levels that can yield "Goonies" and other sized crystals. The most notable find of the day was by Brandon Tracey with a huge assist from Joe Soukup. Brandon found an enormous (had to be 7 inches tip to tip) football - shaped double terminated milky Quartz Herkimer, which was just unbelievable for a first time find !! It was in a large Calcite seam that Joe showed Brandon quite high up on the hill. Groundhog Dave came in second size - wise, with a skeletal Golden Healer palmer with some damage. This one, I dug from underneath a large tree with numerous roots embedded. Jarrath had an early great find, an Ellenville - like milky Quartz point almost fully intact. As the day progressed, more small to medium sized milky, skeletal and water clear herks. Nate Shaw won the water clear mini award, with many small (1/4" to 1/2") water clear crystals. Paul "Mr Reveille" Radziewicz won the Druzy award finding some outstanding black and colorless druzy quartz pieces. Kenny and Ofe Napolitano reportedly found some nice sized Herks as the day wore on, as did other folks.
We will DEFINITELY be revisiting this site in Spring !!
