Junior Rockhound: Program Introduction

Do you know someone that likes rocks?

We think studying rocks, as well as fossils, can be a fantastic opportunity for young children to discover the passion that is rockhounding, which is the hobby of collecting rocks, minerals or fossils. The New Jersey Friends of Mineralogy will be hosting the Future Rockhounds of America (FRA) program.

 

The FRA is designed for youth 7 to 17 that express interest or are curious to learn about geology. The program contains a badge earning system in which participating youth can achieve 20 unique badges ranging from earth science to special effects. After the completion of any 6 badges the child may earn the status of rock hound, with it they will receive a special patch acknowledging their achievement. Additionally, being part of the program gives the opportunity to experience rockhounding through various field trips.

 

Interested individuals can attend meetings free of charge, however core features including badge earning and field trips require membership to the New Jersey Friends of Minerology.

 

Agenda for the first meeting will include introducing the leaders of the program, displaying possibilities for upcoming badges, and detailing additional information regarding the program.
