Our club is invited to sit in on the New York Mineralogical Club's next presentation!
The next meeting of the NYMC will be on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at 7pm ET via Zoom when Derek Yoost, resident expert on all things meteoric, will present a lecture on the Chelyabinsk Meteorite.
*The Chelyabinsk meteor was a superbolide that entered Earth's atmosphere over the southern Ural region in Russia on February 15, 2013. It was caused by an asteroid that entered the Earth's atmosphere at a shallow angle with a speed of approx. 42,690 mph. The light from the meteor was briefly brighter than the Sun and was visible up to 62 miles away. Some eyewitnesses even felt intense heat from the fireball. It remains as the largest known natural object to have entered Earth's atmosphere since 1908!
